Receiving a WhatsApp SMS verification code on an overseas real-SIM number

Registering WhatsApp — or moving your account to a new phone — always runs through phone verification. If your local number can’t receive the code, or you just want to sign up with an overseas number, you can finish verification with a number that receives SMS. Follow the steps below — it takes a few minutes.

Why WhatsApp verification keeps getting stuck

After you enter a number, WhatsApp sends a 6-digit SMS code; if it doesn’t arrive, a “Call me” (voice) option appears once the countdown ends. Getting stuck is usually one of these:

  • Local number can’t receive international SMS: carrier blocking, roaming, or range issues.
  • Using a virtual / VOIP number: WhatsApp is strict on these — it may reject them or ban the account days later.
  • Number country doesn’t match your IP: triggers risk control, no code is sent.
  • Too many requests in a short time: you get “try again later” and a temporary lock of minutes to hours.
  • Waiting only on the call: SMS-receiving numbers usually don’t answer voice calls, so use the SMS channel.

Register WhatsApp with SimSmsBox

Step 1: Pick the right country and card type

Keep the number’s country close to your network environment — don’t use a number half a world away from your IP. A real SIM clears WhatsApp far more often than a virtual number; see Real SIM vs virtual numbers for why.

Step 2: Order a WhatsApp-capable number

Pass service as whatsapp and country as your target (e.g. US), and prefer a real SIM:

curl -X POST https://api.simsmsbox.com/api/sms/orders/purchase -H "X-API-Key: psk_xxx" -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"service":"whatsapp","country":"US","cardKind":"physical","rentDays":30}'
# -> { "orderId": 27, "phone": "+1xxxxxxxxxx", ... }

Step 3: Enter the number and request the SMS code

On the WhatsApp signup page, enter this number. Choose “Send via SMS” — don’t tap “Call me”, because receive-code numbers usually don’t answer voice calls.

Choosing SMS verification for WhatsApp, then polling the API to retrieve the code
Pick "Send via SMS", then poll the order status at a steady cadence; the 6-digit code returns in latestCode.

Step 4: Poll to retrieve the code

Query by order ID; the code is in the latestCode field:

curl https://api.simsmsbox.com/api/sms/orders/27 -H "X-API-Key: psk_xxx"
# -> { "status": "received", "latestCode": "482731" }

For cadence, see Automated ordering and polling — query every few seconds after ordering, don’t hammer it.

Step 5: Enter the code to finish

Put latestCode back into WhatsApp to finish. Note a number can be tied to only one WhatsApp account at a time; a real SIM can receive again within its validity window, which helps with re-verification or recovery.

Common issues and fixes

SymptomCauseFix
Only “Call me” appearsSMS channel briefly unavailable, or countdown not finishedWait out the countdown then tap “Send via SMS”; if it still fails, swap the number
No SMS at allRange risk-flagged / no upstream stockCancel and swap, see SMS code not arriving
”Try again later”Too many requests on the same numberWait ten-odd minutes, or just switch numbers
Banned days after signupUsed a virtual / VOIP numberSwitch to a real SIM and align country with IP
”Number already registered”That number is tied to another WhatsApp accountUse a fresh number

Wrap-up

WhatsApp verification usually stalls because the number isn’t clean or you didn’t use the SMS channel. Pick a real SIM, align the country, prefer SMS, and poll patiently — you’ll clear it. Further reading: How to choose an SMS platform.
